Kush (D Menace), birth name Rory McIntyre was born on the 14th July in Kingston, where I resided for a couple of years before moving to St. Andrew, Stony Hill. Growing up I lived with my mother, father, sister and brothers. At age three (3) I attended the Centre Basic School ; the Lawrence Tavern Primary school , where at the 6th grade level I was successful in the Common Entrance Examination and attended the Oberlin High School . During my first year in the high school I lost my brother Jimmy who was also my school-mate. He was fatally killed in an accident, which took place just four feet away from the school. I had another brother Junior who also attended the school. It was really a sad lost for me, as Jimmy (my deceased brother) was a very loving and peaceful human being. I had to be firm because he would have wanted me to do so. During my years at high school I was always developing my love for music; it was my way of expressing myself (as it was from birth). During my teenage years I was a great dancer (still is), which further exposed me to music. My mother was an Informal Commercial Importer in Kingston ; therefore, I was from school to Kingston in order to help my mother in the evenings. When I was about fifteen years of age my brothers Junior and Devon (which is the eldest son), started forming a sound system (Doctor D Disco), of which I was a selector (DJ) for it. This was just another great experience for me, as I have always liked to express myself and connect with the crowd. I often had to go to the studios to get dub plates for the sound, sometimes with Brett (one of the selectors) or Bully the other selector and one of the owners of Doctor D Disco. The constant contact with other artistes influenced me to write my first song. The first time I sang it before the selectors including my brothers; they were so impressed that I never stop writing songs. From there it was doing dub plates, stage shows, etcetera; my first 45 recording for Mildew Laws (song titled “Right”) was a stepping stone for me. I was doing my thing but other talented youths were in my community, hence, we decided to form a group, Billy Boy Crew. We performed at various stage shows such as Ghetto Splash, Hills Jam, etc and made recordings. After a few years’ personal obligations costs the group to separate. But I kept on following my dreams. After going solo for a while personal obligations deterred me. I had gotten a son (Hakeem) for whom I had sole responsibility at that time. One day I was singing a song of mine and I heard my son singing with me, line for line and word for word. So I began writing a few combinations for both of us. It was well accepted on stage shows; this gave me new confidence and I began performing alongside some of the most popular artistes such as Bounty Killer, Beenie Man and others in Jamaica , without even a hit single. After about 2 ½ to 3 years my son’s mother and I decided that he should concentrate on preparing for his GSAT Examination. So while my son known as King Bizkit is busy with his book I kept busy with the microphone recording and performing with artiste like Spragga Benz, Harry Toddler, Vybes Cartel and others with songs like ‘Mi Deh Ya’ ‘Not What U Do Gaan Too Far’.
I am currently working on my new single “Fulfillment” and putting together my first album for early next year.
